Beyond the Meadow

Exploration can be a unique feeling. One might describe it as impulsive, as it invites every person to travel, discover new places, meet new people, and learn about the history and legends of the destinations they visit. Staying at Villa Kapella, in one of the most beautiful regions of Corfu, you will feel the urge to “travel” and uncover as much of the island as possible.

Many of our visitors choose to head toward the northern part of Corfu, beyond the Ropa Valley and toward the mountains of Pantokrator, wanting to reach as far as the eye can see. Along the way, you will witness the natural beauty of Corfu in all its glory. You will walk beneath ancient olive trees, towering cypresses, holm oaks, and many other trees. As you approach the mountain of Araklis, you will find yourself outside the village of Liapades, a settlement that blends modern tourism development with history and culture. Liapades is approximately 14 kilometers from our villa and 20 kilometers from Corfu’s Old Town.

The first thing one will notice when visiting Liapades is its narrow streets, stone-built houses, and mansions, some of which date back to the 16th century. Many visitors to the island choose Liapades because it is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in all of Corfu. One of these is the enchanting Rovinia, a beach with white sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters, surrounded by lush greenery. The view from the beach is truly stunning, capable of impressing even the most demanding visitors.

A little further south lies another exceptional beach—Limni. This is a thin strip of sand that essentially connects the mainland to a small piece of land extending into the sea. Many people choose this beach because it resembles the famous Porto Timoni beach, located in the northern part of the island, near the village of Afionas.

Neighboring Liapades is the village of Gardelades, a smaller settlement characterized by its picturesque charm. Despite being close to the famous Paleokastritsa, it has retained its traditional character. The village’s name comes from the Italian word “gardel,” meaning observatory, likely due to its location on a hilltop offering panoramic views of the surrounding plains. The residents of Gardelades are primarily engaged in olive cultivation, fruit and vegetable farming, and viticulture, producing the well-known Kakotrygis wine, famous for its unique flavor and aroma.

In stark contrast to the tranquility of Gardelades, one can experience the lively atmosphere of Paleokastritsa, indisputably the most famous tourist resort on the island. Paleokastritsa boasts a wide array of hotels and services that cater to all modern tourist needs. The landscape is breathtaking, with lush olive groves and pine trees descending to the emerald-green waters. The intricate coastline, with its secluded coves and golden sandy beaches, creates a truly unique setting. The settlement extends over a vast area, offering countless corners of natural beauty to explore.

The modern tourism boom and history of Paleokastritsa began with British travelers. Until the 1950s, the only significant structure in the area was the historic Monastery of Paleokastritsa, perched on a hill. It is worth noting that the road connecting Paleokastritsa to Corfu Town was constructed during the period of British rule, significantly improving access to this exceptional destination.

In Paleokastritsa, you will find several beaches, including Alypa, Agia Triada, and Agios Petros. The area offers numerous activities to enjoy, from kite surfing and various water sports to boat excursions and underwater exploration. You have the opportunity to fully experience the waters of the Ionian Sea.

A particularly important aspect to mention is that, despite the extensive tourism development, Paleokastritsa has managed to preserve its natural landscape and charm. It offers a wide range of accommodations, restaurants, cafés, and bars, while the main road is lined with shops and supermarkets catering to visitors’ everyday needs.

The western regions of Corfu, from Paleokastritsa to the island’s northernmost point, are known for their wild natural beauty, which has been carefully preserved to this day. A trip to the northwestern part of Corfu promises to provide you with images and experiences unlike anything you have seen before. Back at the villa, you will have the opportunity to create your own plans and spend your time relaxing in the tranquility of nature.
